Made in Stratford

It is a rare thing to witness such passion and commitment in one place: Stratford Circus Arts Centre has it definitely...this is a place that tirelessly plants seeds of hope and seeds of dreams.

Akram Khan

Made in Stratford is a new artistic commissioning fund bringing exceptional artists together with the communities of East London. Each year for the next three years, Stratford Circus Arts Centre will commission a brand new theatre production, support it through research and development stages and premiere the piece to over 18,000 members of our community and the cultural sector.

In 2015 we trialled a pilot version of Made in Stratford with the award winning Akram Khan Company. The creative team invited two classes of Newham Year 5 students to workshop ideas and themes for Chotto Desh, Khan’s first production for young audiences. The show, based on his Olivier Award-winning autobiographical piece Desh, draws on Akram’s Bangladeshi heritage, experiences of growing up in the UK and navigating different cultural identities. The company described this experience as invaluable and the school groups involved were thrilled to have access to one of the most innovative dance companies in the world.
