We are thrilled to be presenting this joint event with the V&A which could shape your future!

Engage with world class fashion makers and designers, as they talk about their work and how they got started, take part in taster workshops, watch demonstrations of making skills, broaden your horizons, and see displays by up-and-coming designers. You are welcome to bring in your fashion portfolio and CV for advice and feedback.

All events are free and drop-in, and available on a first come, first served basis.

Talks

Careers in the Fashion Industry
11.00 – 11.30
Location: C1
Get an overview of different jobs in the fashion industry and the various routes in. Find out how to gain experience to help you get a job and what skills and qualities you need to succeed, plus projects, workshops and courses you can get involved in.

Fashion and Sustainability
11.30 – 12.00
Location: C4
Creating fashion shouldn’t cost the earth. Find out some of the issues surrounding the human and environmental impacts of fashion. Join in questions about how fashion can be more sustainable. The session is given by Nina Stevenson, from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion.

Fashion Industry Insights and Creating Fashion Portfolios

Joanne Yulan Jong, fashion brand consultant, talks about what it takes to succeed in the fashion industry, giving advice on working with international brands. Designer and lecturer Jane Francis gives practical tips on creating an outstanding portfolio.

Careers in Costume

Simon Kenny, costume and set designer for NOUGHTS & CROSSES running at Stratford East this spring, talks about the various ways into the costume industry, what a costume designer does and the relationship with set designer. Find out what is like being a costume designer, the highlights and challenges.

Fashion East is a non-profit talent incubator discovering, nurturing and showcasing emerging fashion designers. Recipients are awarded support including bursaries, business mentoring, fashion week showcasing and more. Select alumni includes: Ashley Williams, LOVERBOY, Claire Barrow, Gareth Pugh, JW Anderson, Marques Almeida, Nasir Mazhar, Roksanda, Grace Wales Bonner and more. Gain an insight what it is like being a young designer.

Fashion Photography and Film

Gisela Torres, photographer, filmmaker and creative director, gives an insight into the fashion film and photography industry, including her work for Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair and Tatler.

Representation and Identity through Fashion and Costume
14.30 – 15.00
Location: C4
The presentations given by Sandra Vacciana and Pamela Jikiemi explore inclusivity and diversity within the fashion and costume industries, discussing with the audience the impact of seeing or not seeing yourself mirrored back in the world around you.

Trend Forecasting

Jane Kellock, founder and creative director of Unique Style Platform based in Haggerston, talks about the importance of gaining a broad knowledge about retail, range building and the importance of understanding the consumer. Jane offers advice on how to get involved in trend forecasting.

Internships

Members of FAD (Fashion Awareness Direct), give advice on internships and open up discussions on what to consider before taking a placement. FAD INTOFashion campaigns for in-work progression in the fashion retail industry. FAD believes that young people should be able to access a career in fashion, regardless of their background or economic circumstances.

Pleating Workshop

Watch staff and students from the University of East London demonstrate pleating techniques, join in and develop your skills.

Costume for Performance

Staff from London College of Fashion Performance Pathway, will showcase some applied fabrication techniques and draping to manipulating the human form. There will be opportunities for you handle props and costumes.

Fashion Make-up Demonstration

Find out about tips and techniques to achieve best impact. Get advice on how to become a fashion make-up artist.
