By Stephen Sondheim & John Weidman | Director Laura Keefe
Assassins presents a dizzying carousel of the men and women, would-be assassins of eight Presidents of the United States, both ‘hits’ and ‘misses’. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, notorious presidential assassins will tell their stories. But why did they do it?
Stephen Sondheim’s 1990 musical asks profound questions about state power and individual agency and turns the ‘American Dream’ on its head. It is full of irony and dark humour, unfolding the hopes, ideals and murderous motives of its infamous, sometimes idiotic, anti-heroes.
The show is performed by third year students on Rose Bruford’s unique Actor Musicianship programme, and showcases their skills in the dynamic integration of live music with dramatic action.
