We host regular events and activities for over 60s and run targeted outreach projects which aim to build a sense of community, promote wellbeing and reduce isolation through the creative arts.
Our resident community choir Age Well Singers meet here every Thursday morning from 11.30am-1.30pm and new members are always welcome. Led by singing tutor Paul Weston, it has a broad repertoire of classics and popular songs, from Broadway and Hollywood standards to The Beatles. The group give public concerts, including entertaining care home residents.
Our partners East London Dance also run a weekly open dance class for older people, Leap of Faith on Fridays from 11am-1pm. Over the years the group have worked with a range of top choreographers and performed at fantastic venues, including City Hall, the Southbank Centre and Sadler’s Wells. Under the direction of Molly Wright, Leap of Faith challenge the preconceptions of older dancers and aims to profile their work alongside other quality, professional companies.
Every other month we fling open our doors and host Sing Your Hearts Out, a free, open singalong event for over 60s, with performances from community choirs, free hot drinks and cakes and opportunities to get your vocal chords in gear and join in! Generally these take place on the third Thursday of every month from 11.30am-1.30pm.
We also run bespoke outreach projects for older people, for example in November 2016 we delivered an intergenerational project linked to Nick Cassenbaum’s show Bubble Schmeisis. Working with students from St Angela’s Ursuline Secondary School and older residents from Family Mosaic’s Domeney Court, Nick delivered a series of story mapping workshops which explored family histories and memories of the local area. The groups were all invited to come together to SCAC to share their stories with one another, and to watch the performance with a traditional Jewish food buffet.
